Continue hiking up the canyon, which bends to the west, leaving the sounds of the highway behind. Tall sandstone cliffs line the rim of the twisting canyon. After 0.9 mile the trail reaches a bench of pale Kayenta sandstone. The creek tumbles across the polished sandstone and drops 5 feet into a large pool of brown water. Upstream are more pools of still water reflecting cliff and cloud. This small waterfall is the turn-around point for this easy day hike. It’s a good place to take off your shoes and dabble your feet in the warm water or to simply sit and soak in the peace and quiet.
Option: If you want to hike farther, continue up the broad canyon above here for another 0.6 mile. The trail, keeping to the west side of the canyon, is easy to follow although it may be covered in spots with brush and branches from recent flash floods. When the canyon begins to narrow, the trail climbs onto a high slope above deep pools formed by beaver dams. Eventually the good trail ends on a cliff above the creek. This point, 1.5 miles from the trail-head, is the best place to turnaround.
If you continue north from this point you’ll have to wade the creek many times and bushwhack through willows. The Courthouse Wash parking area on the park’s scenic road is about 5 miles northwest from here.
After returning to the waterfall, hike back down the canyon to the highway bridge and the trailhead.
Miles and Directions
0.0 Begin at the trailhead on the Moab Canyon Pathway parking lot on the north (right) side of US 191 past Courthouse Wash.
0.2 Hike east on the paved Moab Canyon Pathway. Turn north on east side of the bridge. This is a good viewing spot for the rock art site. You may want to make a side trip to it before your hike or on the way back.
0.3 Cross the Arches National Park boundary fence.
0.9 Reach the waterfall. This is the turnaround point.
1.8 Arrive back at the trailhead.
